Pros:
It does go through lots of useful examples. As a person persuing the career of becoming an actuary I know that it is worth buying it.

Cons:
The mathematical formulae is a bit skewed in a way that it does not use a nice notation, so as a current mathematics instructor this is not definitely a good book for math people.

As a person who is trying to learn Excel, this is also a bit too difficult to learn from. Although it comes with a CD showing you lots of examples, if you cannot build it yourself you cannot really learn it. I am not proficient in excel, so I find it not useful for beginners.

Summary:
Overall it seems like a good book for people who are already in the field of analysis, but it is not for people who are fresh to learn this subject.

Good Sequel

I would like to thank Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books and NetGalley for providing me with an electronic copy to review. After passing through the wormhole to the pocket universe, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur come across a living D'myurj among the wreckage of his ship. Shortly after a landing party starts to investigate, the ship is overtaken by a breed of aliens new to the Federation crew called the Dayan. When Calhoun is asked to assist the Dayan in annihilating the D'myurj, he sees the chance to get his revenge on them for exterminating his own people. The biggest problem that I see with this book is that a Captain in Starfleet would never go so far against the prime directive as to help a race completely destroy another. In his effort to show Calhoun as, above all, loyal to the now fallen Xenexian people, author Peter David has completely gone against the main tenet of the Federation. The side story regarding Robin Lefler's son Cwansi as the next ruler of New Thallon is interesting, but it really does not seem to have a place in this book. The inclusion of this just pulls the focus away from the main plot and I would have rather liked to have seen the story arc as its own book instead. I would like to read Part Three, mainly because there are so many questions that have yet to be answered. If you are a fan of the Star Trek Universe, you will like this book if you can get past the fact that some liberties has been taken.

Back in the 1800s, before novels were widely available, authors would serialize their works over several months in a magazine. This book is something a a similar sort. The second in a three book serial that certainly leaves you looking forward to the final book.

New Frontier is back, and about time too!

Of all the Star Trek series' out there in written form, I feel New Frontier is the best (Department of Temporal Investigations is my second favourite, so perhaps I'm quite non mainstream from many/most ST fans). It's lively, isn't afraid to be humourous and quirky, yet it will also take the drama to a new level as well.

This second book in the new series, which is kind of a "Return of New Frontier" series, is more like it. I felt the one before was a bit bland, but this one ups the pace, introduces some new characters and complicates the plot a bit more. Am awaiting third volume eagerly

Side note-I'd prefer to read all these 4 books as a 1-2 thicker volumes, rather than x4 150-250 page volumes, but I'm guessing there's more money this way and you can string the readers along further. Cynical view, I know, but why couldn't these be combined?

The authors offer a detailed psychological perspective of the entire unionization process, including early family socialization, the decision to vote for union representation, the development of commitment to the union, members' participation in the union, union leadership, and decertification. The effect of unions on organizational functioning is also considered. The result is a comprehensive assessment of psychological knowledge on the entire unionization process, with a focus on how psychological research might be used to further the goal of workplace democracy. The book will be of interest to a wide range of academics, researchers, professionals and students, especially those in the fields of industrial psychology and organizational behavior, industrial relations, business and management.

About the Author

Julian Barling is Associate Dean and Professor at the Queen's School of Business. He is responsible for rhe Ph.D, M.Sc and Research programs in the School of Business. Dr. Barling is author of of several books, including Employment, Stress and Family Functioning (1990, Wiley & Sons), The Union and Its Members: A Psychological Approach (with Clive Fullagar and Kevin Kelloway, 1992, Oxford University Press), and Changing Employment Relations: Behavioral and Social Perspectives (with Lois Tetrick, 1995, American Psychological Association), andYouth and Employment (with Kevin Kelloway, forthcoming, American Psychological Association). Dr. Barling served as co-editor (with Kevin Kelloway) of the Sage Publication series, Advanced Topics in Organizational Behavior, is consulting editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology, Stress Medicine and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences.

From 1989-1991, he was the chairperson of the Advisory Council on Occupational Health and Safety to the Ontario Minister of Labour. In 1995 and 1997, he received the annual awards for "Excellence in Research" from the School of Business, Queen s University.

E. Kevin Kelloway is the Canada Research Chair in Occupational Health Psychology at Saint Mary s University. He received his PhD in Organizational Psychology from Queen s University (Kingston, ON) and taught for eight years at the University of Guelph. In 1999 he moved to Saint Mary s University where he also holds the position of Professor of Psychology. He was the founding director of the CN Centre for Occupational Health and Safety and the PhD program in Business Administration (Management). He was also a founding principal of the Centre for Leadership Excellence at Saint Mary s. An active researcher, he is the author/editor of 12 books and over 100 research articles and chapters. He is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, the Canadian Psychological Association and of the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

As tantalising as the bared breasts

I really enjoyed it. The setting at Hawaii gave an exotic and erotic backdrop. Jared first saw Cassie on a moonlit beach and thought she was a native since she dressed like them, just a sarong aroung her waist, leaving her tantalising breasts bared. That was a sure innocent way to arouse a man. But Cassie was not out to seduce, she was brought up at the island and thus not self-conscious about her body. Like most Iris Johansen heroines, Cassie unknowingly needed to be needed. She was very protective over Kapu, her beloved horse. Thank goodness it was not another child or dependent person. I liked reading about her resistance to stay in Jared's bed. Cassie wanted their lovemaking to be just mating, so as not to be vulnerable to betray her father. The sexual tension between Jared and Cassie was very strong, which added to the joy of reading the story. I enjoyed reading about how Cassie taunted Jared's command, in her small way but was extremely frustrating for Jared. The secondary characters did not have a cunning sense of humour as in her other books. Brandford was supposed to be but he was a tad bland. Josephine injected some energy into the story but had a relatively minor role in the story development.

good romance

The book begins with a short prologue set in 1795 revolutionary France and then picks up in Hawaii in 1806. The happenings in France are at the heart of a mystery which motivates all the subsequent action, as a stranger appears one day who wants to exact revenge against Cassandra's father. She does not know what happened all those years ago, but she trusts her father, helping him to escape back to France while she stays behind to delay the young Duke of Morland. The characters are well-written, though Cassandra doubts her feelings long after a reasonable person would; also, a secondary romance develops between two likeable characters, which I enjoyed.
Conflict arises first from Cassie wanting the stranger to stay away from her father and later from wanting to reconcile her growing tenderness toward him while staying loyal to her father. The settings -- France, Hawaii and England -- are interesting and used to good effect. Horses figure largely here, and that's a good thing too. And ultimately what you want in a romance, a real desire to see the protagonists united, is here. Johansen writes in several genres and is talented in all of them. This romance was enjoyable and I would read others by this author.

Desperate Hero, Unlikable Heroine......where's the love?

Why on earth would Jared marry Cassie? She never shows him any respect, friendship, caring, much less love. She wouldn't even admit that she enjoyed their sexual encounters. There was no romance in this relationship and poor Jared is rebuffed every time he tries to give this girl some 'softness'. He compares her treatment of her horse and himself and realizes that he would never be the priority in her life. She knew that her father was guilty of some crime hence his need to run away from France and he even alludes to his guilt when Jared shows up on the island, so why was she so sure that Jared was wrong about her father's guilt, when he was an eyewitness? Given that she was loyal to her father, how does that preclude showing Jared some appreciation for the honorable way he treated her and Lani even when he saw them as the enemy? Especially since she enjoyed his lovemaking and realized that he 'would never give her up'. To me, Jared was a sucker for bad treatment and hoped to win Cassie's love rather than have her earn his.

As a sister to brothers, I felt so much sympathy for his character and felt sorry that he had no friend or champion in this story. The only person in his corner was the 'gargoyle' Lady Carrington and even there he played the masochist to Cassie's 'tigress', much to my chagrin. Does this writer expect readers to accept that men of the Regency era were so bored by women who were bred to complement their beliefs and lifestyles that they would love and marry cold, cantankerous, selfish, crude, rude women whose only existence was to be a perpetual thorn in their sides, while bringing absolutely nothing except an unwilling body to the marriage? This was also borne out in the relationship between Jared's uncle (an even greater masochist) and Lani. Are we really supposed to accept that allure or sexual attraction was enough for Jared and his uncle to give up on the hope for a satisfying, loving relationship? Or that Jared would thumb his nose at the ton, marry a battle-axe of a wife who would not be conducive to his status as a duke and completely ruin Josette's prospects?

I could not stand Cassie and kept hoping that her horse would give her a couple of swift kicks in the rump. I hated all the female characters except those in Chapter one. They were the only true women in the entire book showing a healthy appreciation for themselves, their independence and men. I suppose they were there to provide a comparison between the coldness of European women and the warmth of the island women but it fell flat for me having been told that Jared could get any woman he wanted as he was as much loved by women as horses. The only other heroine to whom I've felt such antipathy is Lord Braybrook's Penniless Bride.

Last night I dreamed of . . . a Daphne du Maurier whose works were ``startlingly brilliant,'' peopled with ``most unsavory'' men and ``defective'' women, and whose exegesis here is shrouded in literary fog. In this inaugural volume in a new series of Personal Takes, Auerbach (history and literature/Univ. of Pennsylvania; Our Vampires, Ourselves, 1995, etc.) begins with an interesting enough thesis: that the prolific du Maurier (17 novels, 6 biographies, 2 plays, and a dozen collections of articles and stories), now best known for the Alfred Hitchcock movie versions of her novel Rebecca and her sinister short story ``The Birds,'' is unfairly categorized as a writer of ``romances'' in which suffering heroines fall into the arms of masterful males and live happily ever after. In fact, in tales with male narrators like The Scapegoat and ``Hungry Hill'' (among the author's favorites), her protagonists are killers, albeit otherwise dependent and inadequate men; the women, however feisty they may seem, are destined to have ``something gone wrong inside,'' whether it be uterine cancer (Rebecca) or paralysis (The King's General). As if that weren't depressing enough, novels are further described as ``unabashedly dull'' (The Glassblowers) or ``grim'' (Jamaica Inn), and du Maurier herself as weird. The influence of du Maurier's family (which included her grandfather George, the popular author of Trilby and creator of Svengali, whose literary talent Daphne is ``heiress'' to), plus themes of incest, lesbianism, anti-Semitism, and ``boyishness'' (viz. Peter Pan), are analyzed at length. The discussion is frequently muddled and contradictory (at different points, du Maurier was and was not influenced by the Bront sisters). A concluding chapter revisits the films, especially Hitchcock's, excoriating most of them for reducing intense and often ugly emotional conflicts to clichd romance. Du Maurier - More Than Just Escapist Fiction

Auerbach, a professor of literature at University of Pennsylvania, dazzles the reader with her fascination for the writings of Daphne Du Maurier, the writer unfortunately best known for the so-called Gothic novel, 'Rebecca'and various film adaptations like Hitchcock's 'The Birds' and Roeg's 'Don't Look Now'.
As a young summer camp participant in the early 50s, Auerbach found herself both entranced by Du Maurier's vicious protagonists and repulsed by her label as a 'romantic' writer of escapist woman's fiction. Her analysis of Du Maurier's work vehemently disputes Du Maurier's dismissal by critics; Auerbach finds her male centered stories brimming with fully drawn characters that derive their strength from a violent/murderous reaction to the females who enter their lives. Du Maurier's female narrators (1st person or otherwise) depend upon their omnipotent male counterparts for identity; the so-called romances of Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and Frenchman's Creek are not driven by love as they are erroneously depicted in the corresponding movie adaptations, but revolve around the transition of the female acquiescing to the strength of the male and becoming dependent on him for identity and definition. These female protagonists, like Du Maurier, herself, initially possess the characteristics of young boys and only become women by losing their independence. Above all, Auerbach describes Du Maurier's haunted inheritance: the necessity of keeping of her heritage alive as initiated by her grandfather George, author of 'Trilby' and her actor father ,Gerald.

This is not a biography of Daphne Du Maurier, but rather a literary critique of her many novels and fantastic short stories. As it relates to Du Maurier's fiction, Auerbach eludes to Du Maurier's penchant towards lesbianism, citing Margaret Forster's book, "Daphne Du Maurier: The Secret Life of the Renowned Storyteller" as her source. She analyzes the movie adaptations, finding Hitchcock's 'Rebecca', 'Jamaica Inn' and 'The Birds' inferior to the original thoughts as penned by the author, herself.

As I have found myself compelled over the years to reread Daphne Du Maurier's lesser known masterpieces, like 'The House on the Strand', 'The Scapegoat', and 'My Cousin Rachel', I fully understand Auerbach's fascination with the author and the strange almost spellbinding hold she has over her readers. I recommend this book to anyone who has been under the Du Maurier spell and realizes that she is much, much more than just a escapist romance writer. Like Patricia Highsmith, her amoral comments on male/female relationships wickedly define the 20th century.

Long overdue appreciation

This book is a great complement to du Maurier's fiction. Auerbach has written a very personal account of du Maurier's life and its relation to her writing. I liked the intimate tone of the book, as if you were talking to Auerbach over coffee; there is nothing over-blown or haughty. Auerbach's analysis of how du Maurier's stories were (mis-)adapted for film is brilliant, as well as Auerbach's discussion about du Maurier's sexuality and prejudices. Quite enjoyable.

Daphne Du Maurier: Haunted Heiress analyzes her lesser-known volumes and their characters, providing a strong literary analysis of metaphors in her writing, and ethnic and social observations of her choices and times. The result is a revealing, absorbing study.
