About the Author
Jay Coakley is Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in Sociology and received his B.A. from Regis College (Denver). He is published in a wide range of journals and has edited several books including the Handbook of Sports Studies with Eric Dunning for Sage Publications, and given many presentations around the world. He has served on the editorial board for the Sociology of Sport Journal where he was editor for many years. He is currently on the editorial board of the International Review for the Sociology of Sport

Needed this for a class, but..

While I initially purchased this book for a class that I was taking this semester, I was surprised by the fact that this book had opened my eyes to a whole other side of sports that I was failing to see.

digital in a pinch

I started a class while I was deployed and knew that I wasn't going to receive a paper version of this book in time. While I do enjoy reading digital books, I've always preferred highlighter to paper for text books. Well, a kindle version of this book worked perfectly in a pinch. I downloaded the night before class and got an "A" in the class. In the future, I just might do another e-textbook. Oh yeah, the text was written clearly with excellent references. It could easily be a good leisure read. Not bad for a textbook.
