Witty, profound, encouraging

An astonishing, witty, profound, encouraging book. If design teachers are this good (Judith and Richard Wilde) and students working with them are this good (a large cast of characters at New York's School of Visual Art), then the next generation of design is in the best of hands. The exercises in the book are imaginative and subtly directed toward specific imaginative spaces and image-making skills. The students' responses are completely fascinating, like a graphic version of Broadway's Chorus Line. As you turn the pages, you almost can't help feeling like a dud: I can't do this, not a chance. But someone can--and they're young people, students getting their start under genuinely wise and creative direction. Bravo.
