Things are getting good!

OMG...WTH...you left me hangin'!!!!
I...what...I just can't even with this...I need the rest of this story!

I am really liking what this story is weaving into, and I can't wait to read the rest. I'm not fond of Selene and I hope Lucien or better yet Delilah kicks her butt cause she really deserves it after what she did...or does. We also learn a little more about Lucien in this one as to what his powers are...though we still don't know exactly what he is yet.

Great series so far, and really different than anything I have been reading recently, and if you like short novellas and paranormal romance with a little bit of suspense then you may really like this series.

I am so taken with this story. It is unlike any other. It is beautifully written and you won't be able to put it down.
This novella starts up where the first one ends, with Dahlia not being able to stay away from Lucien. He has some sort of power over her. They are back together and hotter than ever! I mean the pages sizzle!!
Lucien's cousin Selene comes to town and she is not happy with him being with Dahlia.
What happens then is mindblowing!
This novella has all the feels you want in a great read. It is mysterious, magical, hot, and has some great twists! Definitely a must read series!!

Unveiled is volume 2 of the Laid Bare series and this story only gets better. Lucien and Dahlia can’t seem to stay away from each other, so they don’t! Lucien starts to open up more about his family and his power and Dahlia is receptive to what he’s telling her, but not everything works out well. We are introduced to Lucien’s cousin Selene and she is a whole lot of trouble, and I mean TROUBLE!

This story captures your attention and leaves you begging for more! Can’t wait for the next part!

Extensive, comprehensive, fascinating

At some point in the late 60s and early 70s a handful of young wargaming geeks in Wisconsin and Minnesota - almost by accident - found a new way to create and explore imaginary worlds, realities and lives. It was like nothing they'd experienced before, bringing pleasures and excitements far beyond anything people normally associated with "gaming." In a few short years, this new immersive fantasy experience spread from these tiny local wargame clubs to become an international phenomenon that changed the world.

Playing at the World is a study of the creation of Dungeons & Dragons (first published in 1974), and the birth of fantasy role-playing games. Like a methodical archaeologist, Peterson painstakingly uncovers D&D's origins in the theory and subculture of wargaming, in fantasy literature and fandom, and in the wider social context and subcultures of 1960s-70s America. For anyone interested in role-playing games (as a cultural phenomenon and as a narrative/world-simulation form), this book is an inexhaustible treasure trove of information and insights. The depth of Peterson's research is extraordinary and his prose style is confident and enjoyable (and the presentation, editing and design prove that self-publishing is no barrier to absolute professionalism). It's true that some casual readers may be put off by the (deliciously nerdy) comprehensiveness (Peterson is determined to identify and analyse every conceivable source for and influence on D&D's development), but for someone genuinely fascinated by the subject, that is merely another of the book's many pleasures.

But looking beyond the breadth and detail, there are plenty of important larger themes here, which Peterson does a better job of exploring than almost anyone else I've read on the topic. I've long felt that the rise of Dungeons & Dragons was a significant turning point in the culture: a shift in the content, structure and uses of fiction. D&D coalesced various emerging trends and brought them together to provide an imaginary experience that was immersive, exploratory and interactive - in effect providing a template for many of the wider cultural developments since. It offered a new kind of relationship to fictional stories and realities, one that I often think has come to dominate the contemporary world.

Peterson sees this too, and underlying much of this book is his search for a deeper understanding of what made such a shift possible and of what it might mean. He undertakes that search not by making sweeping generalisations or launching into academic cultural theory, but by methodically and fastidiously sifting through the detail: who said, wrote and did what when? And why? What did this mean to the people involved at the time? How was all this shaped by the context (both at the micro level of the Lake Geneva and Twin Cities wargaming scene of the early 70s, and also at the macro level of 1970s America)? Along the way - often in very quiet, subtle ways - Peterson draws out some rich and intriguing connections, resonances, meanings. I love this kind of historiography, where broad themes and profound insights emerge out of a careful nuanced reading of complex concrete factual details. It sometimes demands a degree of patient effort on the part of the reader but the rewards can be tremendous.

Add to that the pleasures of nostalgia (of which there's plenty to be enjoyed here) and personal drama (albeit less than some might like, thanks to Peterson's determination to be judicious and fair and avoid gossip), and Playing at the World is one of the most satisfying books I've read in a while. It was clearly an enormous task, and I'm very grateful to Peterson for what he has achieved. There will be more books by other authors on the invention of D&D, and there will be many more insights and pleasures to be enjoyed. But we should count ourselves lucky indeed to have such a thorough, carefully-researched, solidly written and thoughtful book among the first.

You don't need to have played D&D to enjoy this book

I've never seen the game or played D&D, but am immensely interested in the intellectual and social history, development, and future evolution of successful simulation games. This book had me irrevocably hooked after the very accessible preface/forward/intro and 2 chapters. Very readable, both new and rescued in-depth content, respect for the subject and the reader. Since others have already adequately and accurately reviewed the quality of the information included, I can only add, that even if you're not a D&D player, this book is a don't miss scholarly work about game development, and as important to me, a quite enjoyable read.

Great bit of Gaming Archeology!

A great book about the start of role playing games, and a fantastic look at war gaming from which it arose. Painstakingly researched from nigh impossible to find war gaming newsletters and zines, you get a real sense of how D&D was conceived at how it rose to the popularity it enjoyed in the late 70’s-early 80’s. There are some chapters that get fairly dry and technical, but the author himself is aware of this and warns the reader that if they don't want this info, they can skip to a later chapter.

Any old D&D player will dig this.

That behatted and bow-tied cat from Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat is back, and, not surprisingly, is up to all sorts of mischief. This time, Sally and her brother are stuck shoveling snow: "This was no time for play./ This was no time for fun./ This was no time for games./ There was work to be done." But--you guessed it--the laughing Hat Cat has other ideas, as he lets himself in to eat cake in their tub. He leaves behind "a big long pink cat ring," which he then handily cleans with "MOTHER'S WHITE DRESS!" The dress then loses its pink stain to the wall, then Dad's shoes, then the rug in the hall, until finally the Cat must call in some assistance: from inside his hat comes Little Cat A, then Littler Cats B, C, D, E, and so on, nested like dolls in ever tinier hats. With this pack of felines, Sally and her brother may get rid of those stains, but they'll likely never be rid of that rascally cat. As should be expected from the good doctor, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back provides an excellent reader (and alphabet primer) for those just learning, not to mention ample laughs for everyone else. I wish I had grown up reading Dr Seuss...

I was born and raised outside the US. Dr. Seuss was not part of my childhood, but I grew up in a household where books were serious business. I barely remember my toys as a kid, but I do vividly remember all my book collections, illustrations, textures.

Both of my kids were born in the US and I read for them every single day. They are growing up hearing different stories then I did, and I am very much enjoying the ride with them.

When I first read them a Dr. Seuss book I had mixed feelings. I honestly wasn't very sure if I had liked it or not. But after reading a few books, it just grew in me. Dr. Seuss' books are magical. There is something about them (their oddness, I presume?) that simply sticks to your mind. And most of them have a very nice hidden message among all the chaotic scenarios and crazy characters.
Now Dr. Seuss is one of my favorite authors, and The Cat in The Hat my favorite character.

This book is simply great for preschoolers and kindergartners (older kids too!). The rhymes and the humor are spot on.

I had read it first at the library and end up buying it as a gift to another foreigner kid who wasn't familiar with the story. It was a hit.

Tiny, unscalable text

This Kindle version reproduces the original as two facing pages side-by-side on one Kindle page, resulting in text that is unreadable without a magnifying glass. The text-scaling tool will not work (because it is all one integrated image). It is useless as a resource to help our granddaughter with her reading. What a shame - fortunately we still have the well-worn original hardcover in glorious color.

Food for the imagination....

Does the Cat in the Hat even need a review? Thing 1 and Thing 2? Really? Is there any Dr Seuss book that doesn't transport you back to a quiet summer afternoon spent lounging under a tree, reading? Or, sitting just inside the warm glow of a sunny window, your imagination transforming your room into a colorful world of rhyme and non-reason. Every kid should have this classic, and not an electronic version. Give them a chance to put down the tablet/phone/video games, hold a real book, and use the imagination the escapes too many childhoods unused these days.

It tended to be very superficial--not much information of any value to me.

I read an extract from it in the AARP Magazine. The cover of the magazine and the article itself promised more than the book delivered.

Using the info in this book successfully

I am an in-home caregiver to a loved one with severe paranoid schizophrenia. The information in this book has helped me enhance the quality of life for my loved one tremendously. We still use medicines prescribed by a psyche doctor but we use the niacin too. It has greatly improved her fatigue levels, her blood work, and her depression. She is less prone to the nightly voices so I would definitely say that used with medicine, it can really really help. However we have not used these wonderful methods without regular high doses of mental health medicines.

The one downside is with her energy levels up, she thinks she is suffering anxiety more. She is not used to having energy or a better quality of life so I frequently have to remind her that some energy and some stress is normal for the human body.

Anyone who is, or has loved ones affected by schizophrenia should read this

I have been using the vitamin regimen prescribed in this book for my son, who is schizophrenic and very depressed. We have been using the orthomolecular approach for about a month, and it's already starting to help. He is down to half of his prescribed medicine and feeling better. I wish everyone with loved ones who have mental problems would read this book. It's just too bad that doctors like Dr. Hoffer don't get the attention and credit they deserve. . While conventional medicine can do amazing things with surgery and some other procedures, many conditions are much more safely and effectively treated using natural methods, such as orthomolecular medicine, than with drugs. It's criminal that many natural practitioners are ignored, ridiculed or even persecuted. I'm not a conspiracy nut, but it makes me wonder when I think of how many people in the medical establishment are making so much money from people being sick. Anyway, this book is excellent and very useful. I have already used some of the treatments successfully. I hope the day will come when conventional medicine and alternative medicine work together. Most prescription drugs are very dangerous and cause more problems than they solve. Even if the orthomolecular method wasn't effective, which it is, at least it isn't harmful.

Hope for Schizophrenics.

Short and to the point! Filled with excellent information and understandable explanations of the biochemistry of the mind as it relates to schizophrenia. If Psychiatrists would read this book, there might not be so many drugged out mental patients. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with schizophrenia I recommend buying this book. There is sound research behind the suggestions for helping and even curing schizophrenia by balancing the chemicals that are missing and needed by the brain. Food and supplements, not pharmaceutical drugs are the keys to helping.
