Capture this!

Capture One Pro from Phase One is an alternative to Adobe Lightroom and other raw processors. It's strength is a clearly better raw engine--images look better right out of the camera. Compared to the number of people who use Lightroom few people use it, but that is mistake. Photographers spend thousand on equipment, they develop Gear Acquisition Syndrome all in search of better images. Well, Capture One Pro 9 is part of the answer .

Sascha Erni has written the first independent comprehensive guide to mastering Capture One Pro 9. It is needed because if you have come from Lightroom, Capture One Pro 9 takes some time to get used to.

What Erni has done has broken the program down systematically, carefully, and accurately. He focuses on the workflow as a photographer would: import the images, name them, sort them pick them, and adjust them. He explains how to do layers, local adjustments,and export the images to photoshop. Every concept, every tab, every adjustment is covered. Capture One handles noise and input sharpening well, and the author does a fine job explaining how to implement these with finesse. Output and the process "recipes" are clearly explained

The book is especially well illustrated, well written, and fills in the gaps that the good folks at Phase One have not been clear about. With all, due respect to the. Phase One folks--their videos on YouTube are great--but this book published by Rocky Nook is needed, well done, and will become the go-to source for how to master a wonderful program. The graphics and illustrations really make the concepts come to life; special kudos for this thoroughness.

If you use Capture One Pro, whether you are a beginner or a well versed user, you need to buy Erni's book. Within the first chapters I picked up a couple of tricks. You will to. Clear, systematic, and well written. Now that's a process recipe.

"Not an instruction manual," merely an exhaustively complete explanation of the software

In this (e)book's Introduction, the author states that it's not intended to be an instruction manual to Capture One Pro 9. When I first read that, I was more than a little concerned over just what I'd find in the rest of the book.

But my fears were for naught. Let me just say this -- Sascha leaves no stone unturned when it comes to laying out all the features of the software, and does it in an easily-read, easily-followed way.

So no, it's not a manual in the sense of taking you by the hand and telling you just what to do with your photos in what order. But the book does exhaustively cover the software's functions, and does it in a way that's helpful to readers regardless of their familiarity with Capture One Pro. Like many, I'm a former Aperture user still looking for a new RAW processing "home," and Sascha's explanation of Capture One Pro's unfamiliar (to me) user interface brought to light many features I would have otherwise overlooked.

So if you've just purchased Capture One Pro 9, you'll want this book. If you've downloaded the software for its free trial period, you'll need this book.

Good book with a few technical errors about RAW demosaicing.

I have purchased the Kindle version of “Capture One Pro 9” and I find it’s a very useful book, especially for those who are new to C1. Congrats!

However, I have read the following explanation in section 9.2.1, “The technical Side of Input Sharpening”

***Sensors with microfilter arrays are by far the most widely used in today’s cameras, offering average pixel sharpness as a trade-off for greater light sensitivity. This approach requires two or three sensor pixels to produce a single pixel of color image data— in other words, image resolution is one half or a third of the nominal resolution of the sensor.***

So I purchased a 21 MP APN and it’s only capable of producing 7 MP images? Big surprise, unless I have missed something all these years. IMHO, this is plain wrong and misleading and should be fixed in the printed version if still possible.

Demosaicing is done by computing the two values missing for each pixel (R&G, G&B or R&B) by examining the values of the neighbour pixels. So there is no combination of “two or three pixels to produce a single pixel in the image”. One pixel on the sensor produces one pixel in the image. Went from a 40% to 85% on pharm portion of nursing program exit exam with this!

I absolutely love these pharm cards! I am in my last semester of nursing school, and had to really crash study for my exit exam. With these cards, I was able to go from a 40% on pharm to an 85%. I am a visual learner and these silly but very helpful cartoons really work for me. I highly recommend them! All of my classmates love them once they see them. They are a little bulky as the spiral notebook itself is pretty thick, but I had no problem holding them in my lab coat or scrub pocket... so long as I tied my pants tight!

Use as an accompainment for studying for Pharm....

I like it...for what it does and for the medications it does have. Meaning, that i wouldn't skip buying the book I needed for pharmacology but it has made it alot easier when it comes to studying for pharm as the cute pictures and mnemoics makes it easier to understand certain class of drugs and medications. But as probably noted in previous reviews, there is a lack of certain medications and shouldn't be used as a basis alone for studying for pharm.

Completes the 109 story in Kagero's Monographs series...

This is a typical book in Kagero's Monographs series, of which it is number 44 (catalog number 3044). It is an 8-1'4" x 11-3/4" card cover with 104 pages. It has a 76 page main text supplemented by numerous black and white photos, 24 pages of high quality line drawings primarily in 1/48th scale (some subjects get the full six view treatment), and 4 pages of equally high quality color profiles (two per page) plus two more on the rear cover. The profiles and the front cover painting are the only color in the book.

Kagero covered the 109 in 8 books, curiously in reverse chronological order, 3 G/K series books, 2 F series books, 2 E series books, and the present book. No other aircraft in this series needed more than 4 books. No series covering the aircraft of World War II can leave the Bf 109 out; the trouble is finding something original to present. The present book has a somewhat easier time of this as the early models are not covered nearly as well as the famous WWII models.

The text has a brief development history of the 109 including much biographical information about Willy Messerchmitt. Next there is an extensive section describing the aircraft's service in the Spanish Civil War. Disappointingly, the section describing the service of the early model in the opening months of WWII are brief because they have already been covered in Kagero's Air Battles series. There is also some coverage of service in other air services and notes on painting schemes. The text is liberal in the use of pilots reminiscences.

Problems are fairly minor. The translation, while not horrible, has more than a few grammatical and syntactic quirks. There is a drawing of the V17A prototype with arrestor hook but no mention of it in the text.

Recommended for 109 completists and fans of the Monographs series. The modeller is well served but there are better references for the general enthusiast.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 A-D

I just bought this book and thought that by now most of the myths about these aircraft should have been cleared up. But with this book I find that I am wrong. Instead of helping to clarify information regarding the V Models, the author has added more confusion, especially in regards to those sent to Spain for the Legion Condor. In my opinion it is definitely not worth the price.
