Challenging! Inspiring! Biblically-Solid!

Facedown is a companion volume to Matt Redman's album of the same name. But don't think it's just a fluffy little book meant to make some money off the popularity of the CD. Facedown is a well-researched, well-written, moving treatise on worship as a response to God's majesty and glory. Redman, an extraordinary songwriter, is also a fine prose-writer. He makes his points clearly and elegantly.
Every worship leader and worship songwriter should read this book. But it's not just for worship insiders. It will help every reader to worship God more fully and humbly.

Wow...just wow

Matt Redman released his CD "Facedown" and I don't think people really understood what he meant in the title, maybe they did, but they didn't completely understand it. Matt Redman puts that into his words in this book. Give us a totally new perspective of worshipping, on how it should really be. I must agree with him, how he says when you are truly worshipping you will be facedown before the lord, giving him everything you have. Everyone should pick up a copy of this book.

Theory to Meaningful Practice

In terms of scholarly research and analysis, Joan Wink's Critical Pedagogy: Notes from the REAL WORLD has been insightful and interesting. Why? Because Wink's account isn't pure scientific theory, it's a book that tells us something about ourselves. It tells us where we come from, what we've been through, and where we're going. More importantly, it tells us something about the people we are and the people we want to become. While I was reading this book, it struck me that the term `marginalize' is very real and evident in the world around us. To marginalize "is to place someone or something on the fringes, on the margins of power" Wink states. I am reminded of this on a daily basis as decisions are made impacting our lives, and children's lives. Joan Wink has taken many theoretical aspects of critical pedagogy and written about them in comprehensible language. As one reads through the vignettes, it will be sure to trigger ideas in every individual's experience. Wink's book demonstrates the reality that very complex intricate theoretical ideas which academic language often excludes understandable meaning as one trudges through definitions can indeed be fascinating. However, I do want to add a word of caution about this book. It's obvious that Wink idolizes the idea of education and giving equal access to all students, (and so do I), and is courageous enough to point out how hegemonic principles are manifested. Once you read it, you will be faced with examining your own prejudices and stereotypes. Beware, as it takes courage to name and change Not all folks are up to the challenge! I highly recommend this book. Wink keeps your attention from start to end, and I am looking forward to her next book. Great work!

"Say what you mean; mean what you say"

In chapter two of the book, Wink tells her readers that someone criticized/challenged Joan by telling her to “say what you mean, and mean what you say.” And so Wnk tells her readers that is the goal of this book. She wants to simplify, but not be too simplistic. She wants to clarify, but not trivialize. I want to say right from the outset that I actually really liked the book overall. I think the stories that she tells, her experience as a teacher seems very valuable and I found myself really, really liking the examples she gave about her classroom experiences like with “the Benson kids” and her early writing classes where she just totally ditched the workbooks after reading Hooked on Books and when she describes all the bilingual environments she loves working with – I loved all of that. But I will be mostly critiquing through this review because I do not feel she achieved her goal in trying to say what she means – the book was neither simple nor simplistic, it was complicated. There was plenty of triviality, not enough clarification.

Wink often makes a very important point that she doesn’t want to necessarily define “criticial pedagogy” explicitly. “Please, please, please don’t memorize these definitions. Please please please don’t fall into the jargon pit. Definitions have value only if the reader sits, reads, reflects, connects, and muses on them.” To which I completely agree! This is great, but please, please, please, Joan Wink, don’t make things harder for us than they need to be. Definitions are also great because they help people establish a basic sense of “ok, what are we talking about here?” In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with jargon, especially if you’re writing a text to be used in classrooms. Assert clearly, and leave it up to the reader and the class to discuss your assertions. As an example, she starts describing ‘codificiation’: “the concept, captured on paper, in the dirt, on the chalkboard, on the wall. It is the thought, painted. It is the symbol, symbolized.” The symbol, symbolized? That just doesn’t help anybody, and this type of thing is very much Wink’s style, unfortunately. Or another example from the book: “Let me share with you some definitions [of critical pedagogy] that came from students who have finished their undergraduate work…:

A state of mind, a place of reference
A framework from which to build
A questioning frame of mind
It makes us double-check our action and the action of others
It makes me do the best I can
…
I’m sorry, but these are not definitions of critical pedagogy and only makes things more confusing when trying to help readers define critical pedagogy for themselves. To illustrate, let me give a comparison. I like a certain subject called “permaculture.” You may ask for a definition. If I replied, “It’s a state of mind, a place of reference, a framework from which to build, and it’s something that makes us double-check our action and the action of others. That’s a good idea of what permaculture is. Now you define it.” I expect you would have no idea what I was really talking about, and certainly have a difficult time coming up with a definition of your own after hearing that.

To make things more complicated, Wink seems to spend a lot more time praising the field of critical pedagogy (as described above) and its authors than actually assert definitions for fear of being “trivial” or “simplistic.” Yet twice she feels the need to tell her readers that while reading Giroux “the words on the pages were vibrating as I read.” I love permaculture. Joan Wink loves critical pedagogy. But no one’s going to learn about either subject if we just praise the terms and likewise praise the specialists in the field. Again, this isn’t to discredit Joan Wink’s work or even this book. From the stories and examples and her breadth of reading, I have no doubt that she’s a tremendous teacher. But I also feel like someone needs to just tell Ms. Wink “you know what you’re talking about. But it’d also be great for you to get over your phobia of jargon and write a book that sounds like you know what you’re talking about.”

The best book I've read this year! Dr. Wink has delivered a remarkable book. She takes the often abstract and academic-ese of critical pedagogy and theory and makes the ideas understandable and, even more importantly, applicable to real-life. This book is a timely treasure. I couldn't put it down. Teachers who want to know how to create classes of dynamic thought, learning, and growing, this book will provide concrete ideas and strategies. Parents interested in learning how to create the best possible learning situations for your child will love this book. I was impressed with Dr. Wink's research and her ability to make such tough ideas so readable through the use of vignettes and examples. In today's politcal climate surrounding education, this book is a powerful tool in understanding not only the historical context, but the underlying politics surrounding the rhetoric. Thanks, Dr. Wink!

About the Author
Dr. Arvind V. Phatak is Laura H. Carnell Professor of Management and International Business at Temple University's School of Business and Management. Currently he is the Executive Director, Institute of Global Management Studies, and the Temple University CIBER at The Fox School of Business. Dr. Phatak was the founding director of the international business program at Temple University. He has served as Chairman of the General and Strategic Management Department from 1978-1981 and from 1987-1990. Rabi S. Bhagat is Professor of Organizational Behavior and International Management at the Fogelman College of Business and Economics of the University of Memphis. He was awarded the Suzanne Downs Professorship for Research (2003-2004) by the University of Memphis. Roger J. Kashlak is Professor of International Business and Senior Associate Dean at the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola College in Maryland. He has been with Loyola College since 1993. He received a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA in International Business from Temple University and a Ph.D. in International Business and Strategy from Temple University.

Good book, but If you can't find the online media, read this.

So far, the book is great. I have been working with Win 2012 R2 for months, but this book helped me in some new topics.

Now, for the people who bought the Kindle Edition on Amazon and can't find the online media. Let me give you a step by step directions.

You have to go to the section "Free Interactive Online Study Enviroment" on your book. You will see a link to http://sybex.com/go/mcsawin2012r2. There, select this book, MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41. Click Login, then "GET ACCESS CODE".
Then on "SELECT YOUR PRODUCT", again, select MCSA Windows Server 2012 R2 Complete Study Guide: Exams 70-410, 70-411, 70-412, and 70-41, type you name, email address, and answer the question ABOUT the book. They will ask you something like: "In Chapter 13, what is the last word in the Summary section at the end of the chapter".

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- An encyclopedic collection of demonstrations, puzzles, facts, and charts. There are even several short science-related plays. Many of the experiments are old standards, but there are some new gems such as trying to bat half a ball or imitating animal stances as if they were yoga positions. All of the demonstrations use common materials and include appropriate safety warnings. Activities are organized in a unique manner--by the amount of time and effort involved (quick, make time, and sequential experiments), and then further subdivided by subject area. A thorough listing of books, magazines, and videotapes is also included. As a result, this title is an excellent reference source for teachers and parents. Moreover, Bosak has done a wonderful job of connecting science to other topics, such as including a relevant Sioux fable in the environment section or viewing rubbings of tree barks and leaves as art. The only problem is with the design of the book, which is a mishmash of text-laden pages, black-ink illustrations (often featuring cutesy animals), and pages splattered with different styles of boxes and type fonts. Leagues above most activity books

I am so glad to discover this book is still available. It's far more comprehensive and intelligent than so many other activity books. Laid out clearly, with activities in various realms of knowledge that offer numerous variations so a parent could conceivably use this one book throughout a child's school years. I can't imagine a child not discovering the joys of science (broadly defined) when a parent introduces him or her to some of these delightful activities. The best thing about the book is that so many of the ideas don't require vast preparation, but can be done spur-of-the-moment.

Very Comprehensive and Creative: Includes Unusual Activities

Unlike most other reviewers, I focus on the content of this book. There are several activities in this book which are unusual in that they are seldom mentioned in other books of this type. This includes backwards tic-tac-toe (where you try to prevent your opponent from getting three in a row), a demonstration of why astrology is not science, measuring the drying of a sponge by attaching it to a meter-as-lever, the construction of dinosaur-skeleton models out of pipe cleaners, and the development of estimation skills by having children estimate the number of chocolate bits in a chocolate-chip cookie and the number of dots on a page. There is a section on science-art that includes the use of squares to help children draw accurate sketches of the major anatomical parts of insects and birds.

More familiar experiments include those on magnets, batteries, sundials, soap bubbles, yeast feasts, marbles sunk into liquids of different viscosities, etc. Ready-to-use tabulated information is provided on such things as minerals, the constellations, the solar system, and the animal kingdom. World-search puzzles are also included. A page contains sketches of many types of animal tracks. Still another gives advice on attracting birds to a feeder. There is a whole section on activities related to recycling and the environment.

As if all the foregoing, and much more (literally hundreds of different activities), were not enough, there is also an extensive bibliography provided for further reading. I love creative teaching, and this book certainly fits the bill. As an experienced science teacher, I found this book to be one of the most comprehensive sources of information for science teachers.

I have used this book a thousand times!! It spans ages, learning styles, and settings. Chances are, you will see that science is fun. As an educator, I HIGHLY recommend it to other educators, especially those who would like stronger science component.

About the Author
Mike Tully has studied peak performance for four decades, first as an international sports writer, then as a high school and NCAA coach, and now as an author, speaker and blogger. He covered four Olympics, including the 1980 Miracle on Ice, more than 100 consecutive World Series games and several Stanley Cup playoffs. His teams have won two state titles and many conference championships. They would have won more if he had met Vanessa Sullivan sooner. Vanessa Sullivan owns a degree in Psychology from Southern Connecticut State University, where she played volleyball on scholarship and set school records for digs. She is entering into her third season coaching in the NCAA. Her high school won the state championship and the Tournament of Champions, finishing No. 1 in the state. Vanessa has often looked at coaches and thought, "What game are they watching?" Vanessa and Mike are both members of the Center for Sport Success.

Great read for Male & FEMALE coaches

I have been a female athlete for most of my life, starting with rec sports at a very young age. This book brings points out the struggles of a female athlete so coaches are more aware of what can be going through their female athletes mind. Chapter like "Why is she crying" and "He thinks I'm fat" are excellent examples of what sometimes goes through the female athlete's mind. There have been multiple time in my athletic life I've cried on the court during practice or a game. One of my fellow teammates had an eating disorder because the coach at the time flat out told her she was fat. This book bring the worst situation of being a female athlete out but it also tells the reader how to cope and deal with it.

As a female athlete, collegiate coach, a middle school coach, and a high school coach I have seen the struggle of a female athlete from all perspectives. This book is a great guide not only for male coaches but for female coaches. This book is a reminder that yes as a female we are naturally sensitive people and take everything that is said to heart.

I would recommend this book to anyone, it was well written and said the things that needed to be said a long time ago.

Loved this book. It's a fun, quick read that touches on many of the feelings I struggled with and encountered as a highly competitive, collegiate athlete and coach. I personally related to many of these stories and hope the overall message enlightens other coaches to the complexities of female athletes and their psyche.

After being a female athlete for years and now raising two daughters that are athletes, I find that Coach Mike Tully has truly hit his mark with this book. It shows, love, compassion and the way things truly are! If coaching anyone from girls to women, this is a must read! Love it!
